holly aletha: hey, jess! sending some love to you from a longtime admirer of your blog! i'm 19 and am the only redhead in my family as well! :)
3.9.10, 7:53PM Valerie: That school photo is great!! I know I had my fair share of bad styles... like the perms I tried and them my hair went curly on its own in high school!! Also... I am sure Karen or Elana or a few others in that photo would say their hair was worse!! 3.5.10, 3:42PM
Kasandra: Too funny! We are just finishing up that movie in my freshman English class...and I'm looking at photography blogs tonight. When I see that title "A New Day (with no mistakes in it)"...I immediately think "yet"...like the teacher Ms. Stacy said. THEN, I go on to read what you wrote and it IS about Anne with an "e." It's one of my favorite movies as well! Also, love your pictures and your blog! :-) 3.2.10, 11:50PM
Jen: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Anne of Green Gables!
Also, I had no idea you grew up so close to where we live now...we're in Robbinsville. I have a bunch of friends whose kids go to Drew!
3.2.10, 8:00AM Mary Margaret: First off, I'm with you on "Anne." That is my favorite line too! And I had long CURLY hair that I convinced my Mom and the hairdresser to PERM. Yes, perm because I went to private school where every girl there had permed hair. Boy, was I like an Anne. Now, proud of it. Thanks for sharing. If I can find a picture I will send it to you in solidarity! 2.24.10, 3:54PM
Christiana: Remember when Anne tried to dye her hair and it turned green ...."a peddler we met on the road today".. Love that movie!!
saludos Jessi!
I've always said that I would be very happy to have the red hair:) actually had it so recently, I had like 5 months and then leave it alone and went back to being blond-brown-ash, beautiful! jeje
2.12.10, 4:29PM Megan Beth: ...that's awesome, one of my favorite images ever was one that I thought was a mistake as well. Funny what you find when you go back through!
2.12.10, 2:13PM Jan: beautiful mistake. stunning!
2.12.10, 3:27AM carrie: photo is not a mistake. it's got great movement & feel!
2.11.10, 11:39AM Tim: Haha...love old school photos! And love the "mistake" photo....pretty rad
2.11.10, 10:43AM Betsy, La Vida: At least you made that hair mistake in 4th grade, not 7th (like I did!). Curly haired, girl insisting on a cute bob cut :(
Love reading your little stories and your honesty about happy accidents. Keep it up!
2.10.10, 4:51PM kimberly bee: What a beautiful mistake! I love editing while watching Anne of Green Gables on the side. I probably should be shy to say that out loud, since I'm admitting to watching it recently, rather than when I was little :\. But you posted an adorable redhead poofball pic of yourself, so I'm feeling all brave =). You're too cute... I love the new open-hearted content around here! -k-
2.9.10, 1:49PM Karen (Mikols) Bonar: I LOVE the Anne of Green Gables series! But have never seen the movie. I need to work on this! :)
2.9.10, 9:13AM Erin Fults: Anne of Green Gables was my all time favorite movie as a kid. I always wished I had red hair! The grass is always greener... :-)
2.9.10, 7:47AM Cathy Crawley: Anne of Green Gables was my favorite movie too! I recently upgraded my videos to DVD's, not that I'll watch it a lot but because one rainy day I know I'll curl up on the couch waiting for Gilbert Blythe to tell Anne Shirley that he loves her :)
2.8.10, 4:31PM Lesslie: I love Anne of Green Gables. I think I watched just as much as you did. My favorite part is the second movie when she was in the boat and it sunk!!It's nice to know other people enjoyed that movie. The third movie is so good!
2.8.10, 2:03PM Zlatko: School photo from East Windsor, New Jersey! I didn't know you were from NJ. :-)
2.8.10, 2:02PM Erica Velasco: I have oodles of worst hair ever....and clothes ever....and glasses ever...the list goes on and on...
2.8.10, 11:30AM A: No,I think the TEACHER in the middle had the worst hair.....by far! 2.8.10, 10:31AM
David Akesson: Hmmm. Interesting. Can't say I ever seriously disliked being a redhead - having the colour that 30-50 yr old women would die for when a teenager etc.
But the reality is,... there are two types of people in this world; redheads and those that want to be redheads!!!
That about sums it up. Even your new hubby married you because of your redhead personality.
Pretty lucky, really, aren't you.
And if someone disagrees - well just belt 'em one and that will quell the dissenters :-)
Worked for me.
2.8.10, 7:02AM Amanda Waltman: after reading this post i went and dug up some old elementary school class photos. all i can say is "scary!" i've got to admit that it's nice to know i'm not the only one who had bad hair in 4th grade. ;)
2.8.10, 3:22AM lyndsay: Oh man, middle school is the worst, bad hair or good hair, it is just the worst.
2.7.10, 11:24PM anna: Anne of Green Gables is my favorite book!
2.7.10, 4:30PM Stacey Malleck: Yep. Worst. Hair. Ever. My grade 8 haircut might have been a bit worse though! Who would thought good or bad hair could still effect us today, as "mature" adults. Perhaps we are younger than we think.
2.7.10, 9:19AM j boone: Cool post. It's seems like every wedding I shoot, I get one that I thought was a mistake in camera, but appreciated it later. I used to delete all those in-camera so I would have less to process, but now I take a closer look. By the way, I love red hair. Wish I could have had at least one kid with red hair, but maybe we'll get the red dye out soon.
2.7.10, 9:14AM Tara Wheaton: Those are my favorite books of all time...movie was ok...books incredible. And now hearing you mentioning your connection... I can see you as a Anne.
2.7.10, 12:32AM Jessica: Loved Anne! One of my favorite lines as well. If it makes you feel better- I was the middle child...and my brother and sister both had red hair! I grew up with red hair envy:) Red hair rocks!
2.6.10, 7:45PM bambooska: Okay, yours might look a bit weird but the fourth kid to your right also had issues. :D
2.6.10, 7:26PM Lara: Amen! Go redheads!
2.6.10, 3:58PM melinda: seriously? I LOVE YOUR RED HAIR! if i could put it on my head i would. 2.6.10, 1:33PM
keri: I loved Anne of Green Gables growing up - I might have to dig out the old VHS and watch it.
I too am the only person in my family with red hair, and my sister is taller, with blonde hair a blue eyes. What a coincidence!
2.6.10, 12:28PM Audrey: OH MY GOD, I LOVED LOVED LOVED GREEN GABLES. I thought i was the only one! :) 2.6.10, 12:26PM
Lara Kimmerer: A smile came across my face when I saw the title of your post. I watched the movie version a lot (!) and read each of the books. For a while, I had a heartbreaking crush on Gilbert. oh, gilbert. Thanks for the smiles!
2.6.10, 10:44AM Miz Booshay: That picture is my favorite mistake.
2.6.10, 9:03AM {15:51} photography: When I was little, I used to be able to recit every.single.word of that movie (I kid you not!) and my poor mother had to listen to me do so over and over again!!! But I will forever stop dead in my tracks when I see someone with that gorgeous red hair! I think having red hair gives you permission to be feisty!!!!
2.6.10, 8:54AM Alexandra: Jessica, I'm loving your regular blog posting!! Keep it up :) I get so excited every time I see a post! I saw you on Thursday on the bschool!!! Awesome interview, loved watching it - very interesting. Love that photo that turned out to not be a mistake, and love the cute 4th grade photo :) .. adorable. We all had our awkward stage haha.
2.6.10, 4:34AM Jess: Don't worry, I'm sure Ashley has over-processed short blonde hair by now. ;) Cute post, cute you and I'm sure your hair looks glamorous brown!
2.6.10, 2:20AM Kristina: Oh, I love your mistake picture! It's so dreamy and dynamic at the same time and I love the colours :)
2.6.10, 12:37AM Darla: epic indeed! ;-)
2.5.10, 10:49PM Meredith Carlson: oh jessica. I always read, but never comment. But today I felt I should. Why? Because I have a red-headed daughter. And I LOVE it. And I hope she LOVES it. But I have two red-headed sisters (one who dyes her hair brown) and they both went through phases of hating it....so she might. I guess I'll prepare myself for that. For now though, I consider myself a lucky parent! :) P.S. I also love that dear Anne with an "e"
2.5.10, 10:45PM erika: is the girl in front of you ashley? that makes it even more cruel ;)
2.5.10, 10:16PM Molly: I love, love, love, Anne of Green Gables. I still watch the movies now. If you haven't been to the anne forum you should totally go.... www.anneofgreengables.com
There's a section for the forums at the top.
2.5.10, 9:47PM Embee: Don't feel too bad... I have naturally curly hair and had a similar haircut in Jr. High... Not to minimize your 'hair raising experience' but in Jr. High it's a LOT harder to live down a bad haircut... Everything is much more cut-throat as it pertains to finding your place in the popularity food chain.
2.5.10, 9:17PM Ray Ferguson: Oh, girl! We could have a contest! I decided to have a perm done in second grade. Mom did it. I looked like a gap-toothed poodle... 2.5.10, 8:56PM
Jasmine*: I'm CRYING from laughing so hard. Your hair was EPIC! ;)
2.5.10, 8:55PM Amber Katrina: Ah - we must be kindred spirits. I am a red head too, and I totally identified with Anne growing up; I hated being different. But as an adult, I have grown to love it. I wish it were deeper red, like your natural shade seems to be.
2.5.10, 8:41PM Julianna: I'm a mom of a 2 year old curly redheaded girl and I have been thinking ----- her hair could be fabulously awesome as a teenager or it could be a complete train wreck. I'm hoping to steer her away from the train wreck! 2.5.10, 8:27PM
jenny: you look cute with your red hair !!
2.5.10, 8:25PM crista: oh Anne of Green Gables!!! I haven't thought of that movie in years, but it still makes my heart smile. you totally rock the red hair now (and the brown, I'm sure!).
2.5.10, 8:25PM Katie Lewis: That's so hilarious! I grew up with stick straight brown hair and I ALWAYS wanted curly hair. If you have curly hair you can wear it curly OR straight. My hair doesn't hold a girl at all. But don't we all want what we don't have! Currently I've been dying my hair red and really love it!
2.5.10, 8:17PM Meg: The image is a "happy accident" . If you are drawn to an image, the only mistake would be to not fill a blank space on your wall with it.
2.5.10, 8:16PM Christie Mumm: Aww, Jessica we are indeed Kindred Spirits!!
2.5.10, 8:10PM Dawn Beirnes: both of my parents had black hair, my brother had brown....I ended up a red head, and like most "reds", hated it as a child. Now I wish I still had that same color red as I did then. Although I am still a red head, it's not the carrot top red I had when i was younger. We're a special group though!
2.5.10, 8:03PM Mark Andrew Higgins: LOVE your story Jess. I'm a red head with curly hair and as a guy I remembering basically scalping myself every two weeks in high school so it was never longer than a buzz cut. I have a some of my curly haired pictures on Facebook. Check it out.
2.5.10, 7:46PM Katie Neal Photo: I'm currently a brunette! But, I want to be a redhead!!!!
2.5.10, 7:45PM Cathy Empey: I love your hair dark! (saw it yesterday on @thebschool !
And, cool image. And I think you were so cute in grade school! Thanks for sharing!
2.5.10, 7:43PM Connie: BRAVE, BRAVE girl! Nice hair... I am sure I could dig up a few of those, but I won't :)
2.5.10, 7:34PM Melissa Pearce: Love this. It's so great to look back to when we were still trying to figure ourselves out. Thanks for sharing.
BTW, enjoyed the b school chat yesterday!
2.5.10, 7:27PM Abra Michelle: I, on the other hand, grew up with golden brown hair thinking how cruel it was that I had two aunts with red hair AND two cousins and it totally skipped my dad's kids. Dyed my hair for the 1st time at age 15...red. {{sigh}} Thanks for sharing Jessica and I love, love the feel of that picture. Mistakes are great sometimes.
2.5.10, 7:21PM Em Heizer Photo: And I LOVE that "mistake shot. It's perfect.
2.5.10, 7:12PM Em Heizer Photo: Oh, my. That hair does suck. Mine sucked too, but that was because no one taught me how to brush it.
Anne of Green Gables is my favorite movie as well. I'm sure you know they made Anne of Avonlea as a sequel, and just a couple years ago they made Anne, the Continuing Story which is about Anne & Gilbert's wedding and for some reason fast forwarded 20 years and slapped them in WWI evn though their kids (in the books) were the ones that served. So annoying. They also just in the last year made another one, I forget what it's called but Shirley MacLaine was in it, and it totally changes the entire story and flips back and forth between Anne before Green Gables and as an old woman. They are all made by Kevin Sullivan, but he must have lost his mind at some point because all of the later movies he made are not nearly as good or popular as AGG and AOA. For good reason! AGG and AOA didn't have plots- it was just about life!
I have been to PEI too.. I loved it. That place really is magical. You should go if you ever have the opportunity.
2.5.10, 7:09PM Karalee: Great post. I think red hair is gorgeous - I've dyed my hair a reddish brown colour because I love it so much. And Anne of Green Gables is one of my favourite movies. The quote is actually "Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it." I love that your post was focused on that. I love the same line and use it sometimes to help me recover from bad days and mistakes. :-)
2.5.10, 7:04PM jenberry: i love that you are blogging more. always so unique. always so insightful and always captivating. the photo is incredibly whimsical in color, motion and light. i too would hang this on my wall. large. canvas.
2.5.10, 6:57PM teresa: beautiful mistake. stunning.
2.5.10, 6:49PM Jessica : Definetely a beautiful mistake :)
2.5.10, 6:49PM Tonya Peterson: When I read that on twitter I thought to myself "hey that is from Anne of Green Gables!" Love that show. I love your hair dark! SO chic!
2.5.10, 6:45PM Tara: I am a redhead too - hated it when I was younger (also had the horrific unruly "bangs" ) but love my natural dark red colour now. Even the curls I don't mind so much - but definitely grateful for flat irons on occasion!
2.5.10, 6:38PM Ashley: I loved Anne of Green Gables as a kid as well, but I never remembered that quote and it's awesome! Also, thanks for reminding me that images that we may consider "mistakes" aren't always mistakes after all. I think we all need to remind ourselves of that all the time. Thank you!
2.5.10, 6:33PM Kelly Cummings: I've never seen anne of green gables but I suppose I need to now. I'm a blonde and I dyed my hair brown about 2 years ago and it was hard! I'd so identified myself with my hair and I was constantly wondering if people's perceptions of me were different than they would've been if I was my natural color. I wish it was more of a temporary change, because it's fun but not easy to go back from. I think red hair is lovely though!
2.5.10, 6:23PM Maggie: This is so funny because I loved Anne when I was little too (the movie and the books). And it always made me wish I was a redhead! I thought I was just a redhead at heart if not by genetics. In fact in Junior high (because unlike most people all I wanted was to stand out and be different as a kid, I never wanted to blend in) I started dying my hair red. It's been various shades of red ever since. It's only been in the last year or two that I started wearing my hair closer to my natural blonde! I'm actually loving it, but I do miss the red! Redheads are the best!
2.5.10, 6:20PM Braedon: Love this photo Jess!
2.5.10, 6:17PM AmyPunky Photography (Emilie): Awww I love Anne of Green Gables!!! I saw a pic of you with dark hair on Kamee's blog, and I think you look beautiful. But I love the readhead too. The photo you have posted is beautiful... so imperfect and yet so meaningful and precious. :)
2.5.10, 6:14PM Denise Jones: trully not a mistake ... I love the whirling dancing feet of the bride and the contrasting feet of the groom. Great shot.
2.5.10, 6:12PM Kelly green: My daughter Daisy is a red head and she has the firey temper to match, but I wouldn't change it for the world!
2.5.10, 6:10PM briana marie: beautiful post Jess!
honest, sweet & sassy...
hmmm...who does that remind me of?
2.5.10, 6:10PM Amanda Reseburg- Type A Images: I had to comment on this post, as I am an Anne fanatic...and ended up with a red-headed kid (how that happened is beyond me). But, it's so nice to meet other fans of that quote "Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it"....that quote has helped me countless times.
The image is LOVELY Jessica....just the way it is.
2.5.10, 6:08PM s h e r r y: I really love that shot! :) I think the motion makes it super cute.
2.5.10, 5:57PM Carrie Pratt: A friend of mine used to edit the television show when he worked for pbs. Have you ever been to Prince Edward Island? It's gorgeous!
2.5.10, 5:56PM Marissa Rodriguez: I think you look gorgeous with brown hair and just as gorgeous with red hair! And nope, that photo is definitely not a mistake!
2.5.10, 5:55PM angel swanson: i recognize those feet... :) can't wait to see the rest!
2.5.10, 5:53PM Lindsey Joy: wow, I thought I was the only redhead that didn't love my color and still never died it. should I? love that photo by the way :)
2.5.10, 5:51PM Amanda Richelle: HA! I made the mistake of calculating it the other day - I'm going to end up spending almost $40,000 over my lifetime to BE a redhead! (Even my dad agrees that I should have been born with a fiery head; he says it serves as fair warning)
And, if that's a mistake, it's quite a lovely, dream-inspiring one.
2.5.10, 5:47PM Harmony Loves: Definitely not a mistake! The picture is gorgeous. And I love Anne of Green Gables, that is the best book.
Rock the InnerRedHeadGirl!
2.5.10, 5:41PM kate callahan: That's the kind of picture I'd blow up and put on my wall ... HUGE. Really cool. And I LOOOOVE Anne of Green Gables! I read it every time I'm feeling just a little blue. Anne's way of looking at the world is contagious :)
2.5.10, 5:39PM
